The Less The Kids Are Sick, The Happier The Parents Are!
Are The Kids In Your Childcare Center Still Getting Sick In Spite Of Your Best Efforts To Follow The Established Protocols For Cleaning And Disinfecting? If so, you’re not alone! Thousands of kids across America are getting sick every year from germs, bacteria and microorganisms they pickup in their childcare center. And you know what; in the majority of cases it’s not the childcare center operators fault! You’re using the cleaning and disinfecting products that are recommended, but in many cases that doesn’t solve the problem completely. Here’s why; once you have cleaned and disinfected the surfaces in your childcare center, they are immediately re-contaminated when the kids or employees with germs on their hands touch those cleaned surfaces. And when the kids get sick, this causes trouble for the parents because mom or dad has to stay home from work. Not only do the parents lose money or vacation time when they stay home, they also fear job loss due to their absenteeism. In this economy, with lots of people unemployed, parents don’t want to miss work too often because there are plenty of other qualified people to take their place! So when the kids are constantly sick from “bugs” they picked up at the childcare center, parents get upset (and rightfully so). And the sad truth is, many parents will go ahead and bring sick kids to the childcare center because they absolutely cannot miss work. Now the rest of the kids (and your staff) who were not sick, are exposed to germs of a little one who is (which can cause employee absenteeism in your own business, costing you even more money). And when the parents feel that the kids are sick to often, they are inclined to move their kids to a different childcare center, thereby causing you a loss of revenue! Another problem with using the standard cleaning and disinfecting products is they can be harmful to the person applying them and to the environment. And in many cases workers are mixing several different cleaning chemicals and if they aren’t careful, toxic fumes can be produced. So what’s the solution? The real solution is to take a different approach to managing the environment inside your childcare center! And the Healthier Environment Living Program™ is just what you need! It makes complete sense to take a “holistic approach” to determine what kind of germs, bacteria, viruses and microorganisms are present in your childcare center before determining what type of actions are needed to keep your facility as germ and bacteria free as possible. And your local IASQ™ Indoor Air and Surface Quality Certified Inspector Professional will do just that! Before any “solutions” are recommended, air and surface sampling will be conducted in order to determine what type of issues that you face in your childcare center. As soon as the test results are back from the EPA Certified Laboratory, your local IASQ™ Indoor Air and Surface Quality Certified Inspector Professional will sit down with you and go over the test results. Based on the test results received, a custom solution will be designed for your childcare center. Your custom solution will definitely include an antimicrobial treatment with Healthier Environment Living Program™ trademarked XMICROBE™ solution! You see, protecting your childcare center from bacteria, mold and mildew is easier than ever with XMICROBE™ unique antimicrobial technology. Our XMICROBE™ Technology offers an antimicrobial protection that works every minute of every day with just one simple application and it’s affordable and long-lasting. XMICROBE™ Technology creates a durable bond to the surfaces of your childcare center preventing further growth, spreading of bacteria and cross-contamination. Protect the children in your facility and ease your mind as XMICROBE™ Technology works to control Microbial growth. The antimicrobial treatment is perfect for: Sleeping mats Bathrooms Kitchens Cribs Toys Changing tables Offices Play areas Door handles Computer desks What will the XMICROBE™ Technology do for Your childcare center: XMICROBE™ Technology continuously fights the growth of microbes that make the kids sick! XMICROBE™ Technology protection makes the surfaces in your childcare center easier to clean and keeps them cleaner in between cleanings. XMICROBE™ Technology is applied to porous and nonporous surfaces and is difficult wash off! XMICROBE™ Technology is engineered to provide continuous antimicrobial protection for an extended period of time. Why is using XMICROBE™ antimicrobial treatment better than using poisonous chemicals to keep your childcare center cleaner and more germ-free? Conventional cleaning products penetrate living cells and kill by way of poisoning or chemically altering the organism. They are designed to act quickly and dissipate quickly to avoid adverse affect humans and animals due to their toxic ingredients. Most commercial antimicrobials used for treating building services do a good job of killing some bacteria and fungi, although most of them have a limited spectrum of effectiveness. And heavy metal-based antimicrobials, such as silver ion may leach into the environment and lose their effectiveness over time. But XMICROBE™ Technology takes a totally unique approach. It provides long-term control of growth on treated services. The surface itself is actually modified to make it to antimicrobial active. Plus, the XMICROBE™ Technology assists in preventing Biofilm build up. Biofilm build up on an irregular surface accumulates over time and offers a difficult to clean surface with a microbial food source. But the XMICROBE™ Technology reduces the Biofilm build up making the surface easier to clean with no microbial food source! You’re probably wondering how the XMICROBE™ Technology works, so check this out… XMICROBE™ Technology is a patented, EPA registered revolutionary new product. And it prevents the growth of an amazingly wide array of bacteria, mold, mildew, algae and yeast. XMICROBE™ technology acts like a bed of microscopic spikes that pierces the cell walls of microbes. This is a totally new approach to providing long-lasting antimicrobial protection. XMICROBE™ Technology is unique. One end of its molecule creates a strong bond with a multitude of surfaces, porous and nonporous, forming a highly durable protective coating. The other end of the molecule forms a microscopic bed of spikes that punctures microbes like a bed of nails. XMICROBE™ Technology physically ruptures the cell walls of these microbes, without the use of poisons. Since XMICROBE™ Technologies methodology is mechanical instead of poisons, it does not create “Superbugs,” which are microbes that build up a resistance to treatment. XMICROBE™ Technologies molecular spikes are long chains of atoms that are large enough to pierce the cell walls of various microbes. Being only about 1000 the diameter of a human hair, they are too small to harm large cells in mammals. These chains of atoms carry a strong positive charge that attracts negatively charged bacteria. XMICROBE™ Technology has been found in independent testing to be effective against a wide array of microbes, including Staphylococcus arias, E. coli, various Salmonella strains, black mold, athletes foot, influenza A., skin infections, and many others. Here’s the bottom line… If you want a cleaner, healthier childcare center, with less sick kids and happier parents and employees you need XMICROBE™! So give us a call Today at 888-558-5254 and we’ll get a IASQ™ Indoor Air and Surface Quality Certified Inspector Professional to visit you right away, so that you can provide a Healthier Environment for your kids, parents and employees! You Can Run A Healthier School, Learn How!
If you operate a school today, you already know this is a big problem… (AP) American children miss 22 million days of school each year due to colds, flu and other infections, experts say. But that statistic should come as no surprise to the nation’s teachers: In a new survey, seven out of 10 say their classrooms aren’t regularly disinfected by custodians, and more than half say they spend their own money and time ridding their classrooms of germs. “A few are even recruiting parents to come in and, instead of helping them correct papers, they are asking them to help disinfect the classroom,” said Dr. Paul Horowitz, medical director for pediatric and adolescent clinics at Legacy Emanuel Children’s Hospital in Portland, Ore. Horowitz released the survey results at a special “Back to School” press briefing on children’s health, held Thursday in New York City and sponsored by the American Medical Association. Childhood infections like colds and flu that are transmitted in the classroom are more than a nuisance. The average American child contracts 6.5 colds a year, each lasting at least three to five days, Horowitz said. Besides keeping kids home from school and lowering their in-school performance, infections like these cause parents to miss an estimated 126 million workdays annually caring for a sick child, Horowitz added. Germ-ridden classrooms take their toll on teachers, too: the average teacher now clocks an average 5.3 sick days per school year. It’s not that teachers aren’t doing their best to keep classrooms clean. For the new survey, teachers from across the country were encouraged by the Scholastic publishing company to fill out an online questionnaire at the company’s Web site. A total of 614 teachers who taught during the 2004-2005 school year completed the survey. “Most said they considered their classrooms clean,” Horowitz said. But most of the teachers also understood that clean doesn’t mean germ-free, especially when obviously sick kids show up for class. “Nine out of 10 teachers reported that children often come to school sick,” Horowitz said. “I see this myself in my office — a child will come in quite ill, and I’ll be told they’ve been ill for three days, and this is the first day they’ve actually missed a day of school.” And sick kids mean sick teachers: According to the survey, three-quarters of teachers believe that they contracted some form of transient illness from children they taught during the previous year. Every desktop, pencil sharpener, doorknob and faucet an infected child touches becomes colonized with germs, Horowitz pointed out. Unfortunately, “70 percent of teachers reported that their janitorial staff does not regularly disinfect their classroom,” he added. So what are you as a school owner or administrator suppose to do to protect the kids and employees? The solution is to take a different approach to managing the environment inside your school! If You Want To Excel In The Competitive Hotel Environment, Offer A Healthier Room!
This is a typical story we see in the news regularly about the hotel industry…and consumers are worried! (CBS) Now that summer is just about here, more families will be spending time in hotel rooms. While they might look clean, and you’d like to believe they are, the truth is they’re probably teaming with germs, says Travel + Leisure Family magazine Senior Consulting Editor Mark Orwoll. A lot of travelers assume a hotel bathroom may not be as clean as their own, that germs may linger on the carpets or the bedspread, but few people think twice about the room’s light switch. That’s right, the light switch! Sheets are regularly laundered and changed, and showers scrubbed, but it’s unlikely that hotel maids are wiping down hard surfaces such as doorknobs and light switches, alarm clocks, ice buckets or hotel-inscribed pens. Cold viruses, e. coli and other icky germs can live on hard surfaces for a day or longer. This means if the person who stayed in the room before you had a cold, there’s a chance you’ll get sick too. What about hotel beds? Many people assume that bedspreads in particular are teaming with germs. These people are right, Orwoll says. Bedspreads aren’t routinely washed, so you should take them off the beds and stash them in the corner. If you’re cold, ask for another blanket. So what is the solution for hotel owners? The real solution is to take a different approach to managing the environment inside your hotel! And the Healthier Environment Living Program™ is just what you need! Prove To Your Customers & Prospects That Dangerous Germs Are Not Muscling In To Your Gym?
The news media earns big bucks by dishing out bad news like this about your industry… Mutant pathogens. Germs. Super bugs. Thriving bacteria. The list of names for the microorganisms that can be found anytime, anywhere — including your club — is anything but comforting. Recent media articles and news magazine programs have brought front-and-center attention to certain microbes, especially antibiotic-resistant ones and their presence in fitness facilities. Because the common perception is that gyms are dirty, dank and dark, health clubs are a seemingly perfect place for microorganisms to thrive. About 80% of all infectious disease is transmitted by both direct and indirect contact, says Philip Tierno, director of clinical microbiology at New York University Medical Center and the author of “The Secret Life of Germs.” That makes the gym, with its sweaty bodies in close proximity, a highly conducive environment for catching everything from athlete’s foot to the flu. In swabs of medicine balls, for example, Tierno found samples of community-acquired MRSA — a strain of staph resistant to some antibiotics. “You take your chances,” Tierno says. “Any time you touch a medicine ball or machine, you have to know that your hands are contaminated and should be washed.” Although the media’s attention was focused on preventing the new virulent strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA (pronounced mersa), in school gyms, some health club patrons wonder if it’s not so far-fetched to worry if they could pick up MRSA at their gyms. And a study of sports equipment at two fitness centers in a military community published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine in 2006 showed benign bacteria and the rhinovirus, which causes the common cold, were on 63 percent of equipment surfaces that had contact with hands. Weight equipment was significantly more contaminated than aerobic equipment, the study said. So, if you own a health club or gym what are you to do… How About Empirically Proving To Your Customers And Prospects That Your Facility Is A Healthier Environment! Medical Facilities Across the United States Reach Out for a Better Way to Protect Their Air and Surfaces
The Problem As stated by Kristen Gerencher’s in the Wall Street Journal’s Health Matters - It’s the invisible threat that lurks whenever you stay in a hospital: hospital-acquired infections, the potentially dangerous bugs that can be spread around the facility when doctors, nurses and staff fail to wash their hands, sterilize medical equipment or take appropriate precautions with high-risk patients. The infections are especially sneaky because most symptoms show up after you leave the hospital, typically within 30 days of being discharged. The U.S. Government Accountability Office weighed in this week on the state of hospital infections in a report that urged the Department of Health and Human Services to play a bigger role in overseeing recommended practices for countering infections. The GAO, the investigative arm of Congress, also called for linking the four databases used to collect information on hospital infections to get a more consistent and national picture of the problem. About 2 million Americans get hospital-acquired infections every year, says Lisa McGiffert, Austin, Texas-based manager of Consumers Union’s Stop Hospital Infections campaign. Some patients make a full recovery after a simple course of antibiotics and others battle invasive infections for years. Almost 100,000 people die from hospital infections every year, making the bugs the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., McGiffert says. People who get seriously ill but survive often face many costs, not to mention their suffering and disability, she says. “They have doctors, medicines, wound care, physical therapy that sometimes goes for years and years.” Nationwide, a standard estimate is that hospital infections cost $5 billion to $6 billion a year, she says, noting that it’s likely to be much higher because that figure is 10 years old. “If the federal agencies focused on it, they could save thousands of lives and billions of dollars,” McGiffert says. “In 20 years or even in 10 years this could be a really rare occurrence if everyone concentrated on it, put the resources into it.” Culture change One promising development is the culture change that’s starting to catch on at hospitals, she says. “Hospitals are at least aware of the problem and setting goals,” says McGiffert, who runs the Consumers Union site StopHospitalInfections.org. “Before, they were saying these were inevitable.” There are 22 states that require hospitals to report their infection rates. Several bills in Congress would create national reporting standards and requirements and impose a mandated ratio of infection-control professionals per number of hospital beds. Some states have been leading the push as well. Pennsylvania now requires hospitals to report the incidence of all four major types of infections and screen for an antibiotic-resistant bug known as MRSA. Next year New York will begin mandating the state’s hospitals to disclose the ratio of infection-control professionals per bed. A good number to aim for is 1 per 100, McGiffert says. “In order to control infections, you have to have a well-organized program that involves everyone in the hospital.” McGiffert says she’s seen a lot of progress in the five years Consumers Union has run its advocacy campaign. But there’s much work ahead. “We really don’t have a good system for assessing the progress we make because we don’t have an organized national system for collecting the incidences of infection when they occur.” The Solution Dr. Michelle in Oklahoma; an OB-GYN is keenly aware of indoor health and the challenges many of my patients face in protection from harmful bacteria and microbes. A Better Idea For Controlling Resistant Germs In Nursing Homes!
If you run a nursing home, you already know that “Super Bugs” are one of the toughest problems you face today… A Johns Hopkins study of adult patients admitted to The Johns Hopkins Hospital showed that patients who resided in nursing homes or other kinds of long-term care facilities at any time within the last six months were far more likely than other adult patients to carry or be infected with a drug-resistant superbug. The study, conducted over a four-month period in 2006, was intended to grasp the extent of one of the lesser known hospital superbugs, multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter (MDR-ACIN), and control its spread among the hospital’s most vulnerable adult patients. More than 1,600 were screened within 24 hours of admission to any one of five intensive care units where previous infections had been recorded. Results showed that patients who had been in nursing homes, either admitted to Hopkins directly from a long-term care facility or transferred from home or another community hospital, were 12 times more likely than other patients to be carriers of the bacterium. Rates were even higher, 22 times, among those patients who were wheelchair- or bed-bound because their legs were paralyzed. What mostly surprised researchers was that a majority of the MDR-ACIN-colonized patients, who ranged in age from 19 to 74, also carried high rates of three other, more common superbugs. Sixty-two percent had methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), 77 percent had vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), and 39 percent had extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) gram-negative bacteria. “Our results dramatically illustrate how widespread these drug-resistant bacteria have become among health care facilities in just the last decade,” says Lisa Maragakis, M.D., the hospital epidemiologist who led the investigation. “This is only going to complicate our efforts to get a grip on the problem, and it is going to place added pressure on all hospitals and other health care facilities to increase and fine-tune their surveillance and control measures.”The immediate danger to patients from superbugs is that they can lead to potentially dangerous bloodstream infections, says Perl, a professor of medicine and pathology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. So is there a real solution? The real solution is to take a different approach to managing the environment inside your nursing home! And the Healthier Environment Living Program™ is just what you need! It makes complete sense to take a “holistic approach” to determine what kind of germs, bacteria, viruses and microorganisms are present in your nursing home before determining what type of actions are needed to keep your facility as germ and bacteria free as possible. And your local IASQ™ Indoor Air and Surface Quality Certified Inspector Professional will do just that! Before any “solutions” are recommended, air and surface sampling will be conducted in order to determine what type of issues that you face in your nursing home. As soon as the test results are back from the EPA Certified Laboratory, your local IASQ™ Indoor Air and Surface Quality Certified Inspector Professional will sit down with you and go over the test results. Based on the test results received, a custom solution will be designed for your nursing home. XMICROBE™ Technology creates a durable bond to the surfaces of your nursing home preventing further growth, spreading of bacteria and cross-contamination. Protect the patients and employees in your nursing home and ease your mind as XMICROBE™ Technology works to control Microbial growth. The antimicrobial treatment is perfect for: Kitchens Dining Rooms Bathrooms Visiting Areas Offices Patient Rooms Physical Rehab Facilities Meeting Rooms Laundry Rooms Janitorial Areas What will the XMICROBE™ Technology do for Your nursing home? XMICROBE™ Technology continuously fights the growth of microbes that can make your patients and employees sick! XMICROBE™ Technology protection makes the surfaces in your nursing home easier to clean and keeps them cleaner in between cleanings. XMICROBE™ Technology is applied to porous and nonporous surfaces and is difficult wash off! XMICROBE™ Technology is engineered to provide continuous antimicrobial protection for an extended period of time. Why is using XMICROBE™ antimicrobial treatment better than using poisonous chemicals to keep your nursing home cleaner and more germ-free? And it prevents the growth of an amazingly wide array of bacteria, H1N1 (swine flu virus), MRSA, VRE, mold, mildew, algae and yeast. XMICROBE™ Technology has been found in independent testing to be effective against a wide array of microbes, including H1N1 (swine flu virus), MRSA, VRE, Staphylococcus arias, E. coli, various Salmonella strains, black mold, athletes foot, influenza A., skin infections, and many others. Here’s the bottom line… If you want a cleaner, healthier nursing home, with happier patients, families and employees you need Healthier Environment Living Program™. So give us a call Today at 888-558-5254 and we’ll get a IASQ™ Indoor Air and Surface Quality Certified Inspector Professional to visit you right away, so that you can provide a Healthier Environment for your guests and employees! Video: Germs on the Job! Protect Yourself with XMICROBE Long Lasting Protection
VIDEO: Are You Working with Dangerous Germs? “The Early Show” Takes a Closer Look at Germs Lurking in Its Workplace. Watch this amazing video and then read on as we show you how to eliminate harmful germs, bacteria, viruses, mold and mildew from virtually any surface and keep it off with our Long Lasting XMICROBE Products and Services! Watch CBS News Videos Online (CBS) In the final installment of our series “Germ Warfare,” CBS News correspondent Kelly Wallace looked at how germy, and potentially disease-ridden, the workplace can be. Wallace reported work days lost due to illness and injury carry total annual costs of nearly $63 billion, according to a study in the July Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. However, in some cases, Wallace said, it may be the workplace itself that’s responsible for the sick time. Click here for recommended solutions So how much bacteria and germs do you really come into contact with at work? Dr. Charles Gerba — also known as Dr. Germ — has been tracking the levels of disease-causing bacteria for 10 years. He uses a germ-meter, which gives a relative idea of how many bacteria are living on a surface. Armed with cotton swabs, Gerba and his team at of the University of Arizona have collected over 7,000 samples from workplaces around the country and found that the average workplace has 21,000 bacteria per square inch. That may not mean much to you, but compare it to the average workplace toilet that has an average of just 49 bacteria per square inch, according to Gerba. Wallace said that means your workplace may have 400 times more bacteria than your office toilet. Gerba said, “People don’t usually start cleaning the desktop until they’re sticking to it.” Wallace decided find out how much bacteria and germs lived on her own desk and in her workplace with Gerba. Click here for recommended solutions Television stations are statistically the filthiest, according to Gerba. So how did “The Early Show”’s busy workplace measure up? Wallace and Gerba took a look at the CBS workplace environment with his “germ-meter” and found desks, phones, door handles, elevator buttons and other common surfaces were a veritable Petri dish of germs. In some areas, such as on desktops, he found hundreds of thousands of germs, while in others, such as on the elevator button, he found millions. But how did Wallace’s own desk measure up? Gerba had the highest reading he said he’d ever seen on a desk. Gerba told Wallace, “You may have a new life form evolving there.” Wallace added on “The Early Show” that her phone and keyboard were much cleaner than her desktop. “Early Show” co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez, who had a relatively low count of bacteria on her desk, said she likes to use disinfecting wipes to keep her surfaces as clean as they can be. Use of Plants to Clean the Air !
Growing Fresh Air with 8 Powerful Plants by Janelle Sorensen What do you do when you become allergic to the air? When your lungs begin to shut down because the air is too contaminated? Kamal Meattle suffered from this fate and guess what his solution was? Grow new air. Based on years of NASA studies, other scientific research, and 15 years of his own testing, Meattle discovered that three common houseplants, used strategically throughout a home, could vastly improve the indoor air quality. Here’s the breakdown: Areca Palm is “The Living Room Plant” - This plant is a daytime oxygen factory and Meattle recommends having 4 shoulder height plants per person. Mother-in-Law’s Tongue is “The Bedroom Plant” - This plant is an evening oxygen factory and Meattle recommends having 6-8 waist-high plants per person. Money Plant is “The Specialist Plant” - This plant is the filter that removes formaldehyde and other volatile organic chemicals from the air. If maintained appropriately, Meattle claims you could live inside a bottle with a cap on top and these three plants would generate all the fresh air you need. Not looking to live in a bottle? These plants will certainly still improve your indoor air quality (even if you don’t have quite so many). And, if you’re not satisfied with just three options, other new research has identified five “super ornamentals” that demonstrated high effectiveness of contaminant removal. These include the purple waffle plant (Hemigraphis alternataa), English ivy (Hedera Helix), variegated wax plant (Hoya cornosa), Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus) and the Purple heart plant (Tradescantia pallida). .gallery { margin: auto; } .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } .gallery img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } Of the 28 plants tested, these five were effective at reducing levels of a number of common household VOCs, including benzene, toluene, octane, alpha-pinene and TCE. The work, funded by the University of Georgia’s Agricultural Experiment Stations, was published in the August 2009 issue of HortScience. Ready to grow your own fresh air? NASA studies recommend that you use one good-sized houseplant in a 6 to 8-inch diameter container for every 100 square feet of your home. Though, additional research is being done to identify exactly how many of each type of species is necessary for remediation (as in Meattle’s work). You should also be sure to keep the foliage clean and dust free (so the leaves can do their job). And, keep the top of soil clean and free of debris, as in some cases, that’s where the bulk of the filtering is taking place. The healthier your plants, the more vigorously they’ll grow, and the better they’ll clean the air for you. Read More →
Pet Frog Salmonella Spans 31 States
CDC: Outbreak Sprang From California-Bred African Dwarf Frogs By Daniel J. DeNoon WebMD Health News Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD Jan. 7, 2010 — Pet African dwarf frogs from a single California breeder caused an 8-month salmonella outbreak in 31 states. The outbreak extended from California to Massachusetts. Of the 85 cases, mostly in children, 16 were hospitalized, the CDC reports in its weekly MMWR publication. No deaths were reported. Although reptiles — turtles in particular — have been responsible for previous nationwide salmonella outbreaks, this is the first known multistate outbreak spread by amphibians. In this case, the amphibians were African dwarf frogs. The tiny creatures are less than 2 inches long from tip to tail. They live in water and are sold as aquarium pets. The frogs are hard to handle — they tend to rest at the bottom of aquariums — so most of the infections likely came from contact with the water in which the frogs swam. Nearly a third of contaminated households cleaned the frog aquariums in the kitchen sink, “posing a risk for cross contamination with food preparation areas,” the CDC notes. Infections in Utah and Colorado came from frogs given away as carnival prizes. An infection in New Mexico came from a frog purchased in a pet store; one in Ohio came from a department store. Many of those infected didn’t know frogs or other amphibians could carry salmonella. Many patients’ parents had bought their kids frogs in order to avoid salmonella-carrying turtles. It took the CDC a long time to figure out that frogs were the source of the outbreak, as cheese-flavored crackers consumed by several early patients led disease detectives on a wild goose chase. Eventually, the frogs were traced to a single California breeder. DNA tests showed that salmonella in water tanks and gravel from frog habitats was the same strain that caused the outbreak. The CDC notes that there’s no law against selling small frogs. To prevent infections, the CDC advises pet owners to wash their hands thoroughly after touching animals or cleaning aquariums. Is your gym contagious?
By Wina Sturgeon, Adventure Sports Weekly (adventuresportsweekly.com) People are using tissues to turn doorknobs and staying away from crowds. Schools have closed down. And a lot more hand washing than ever before is going on.But can you get the swine flu from your gym? The answer is yes. Think about that nasty dumbbell that’s been gripped by who-knows-how-many sweaty hands. Imagine how often the pin for a machine weight stack has been pinched between someone’s thumb and forefinger; the same two digits that person may have used to catch a cough or wipe a nose. You may avoid touching doorknobs with your bare hands, but what about the contamination of the pull-down bar on the lat machine? Worse, the gym is a place where people sweat a lot and breathe hard. One infected person in a crowded aerobics class can do a lot of damage. Even if you’ve already received the swine flu vaccine, the flu is not the only contagious illness going around. During this season, everyone’s susceptible to picking up a cold or other virus. And, though the H1N1 strain is dominant, it’s not the only strain of flu out there. Even if you’ve been vaccinated, you may be vulnerable to another type of flu virus. Taking precautions at the gym has not yet become commonplace, but it soon will. You can start now to protect yourself. Here’s how: Mix up a solution of half isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and water in a spray bottle. Put this in a small backpack with a roll of paper towels and a plastic bag. Before using any free weight or machine, spray the surface you will be touching with a good shot of the alcohol mixture. Wait at least 30 seconds, then wipe it dry with a paper towel. Put the used towel in the plastic bag. At the end of your workout (though it’s a violation of the green ethic), throw away the bag of used paper towels. Wash your hands before leaving, then use hand lotion to keep them moisturized. Frequently washing your hands can dry and flake the skin, causing minute cracks that are perfect openings for any stray bacteria or viruses to enter your body. If using a spray bottle before every new exercise seems too much trouble, try wearing rubber gloves. The thick dishwashing kind, not thin latex gloves that can be easily torn or shredded in the rugged environs of the gym. Two things to remember when wearing rubber gloves while working out: they may interfere with your grip; and they must be removed before you touch any mucous membrane. That includes the eyes, lips and inside of the nose. These membranes are totally porous, and the briefest of touches will inoculate you with any cold or flu virus that happens to be on the fingers of the glove. Spray the alcohol mixture on the handlebars of your spin bike. That mix you brought also comes in handy during fitness classes. Stand in the back of the room for an aerobics class, so all that heavily breathed air goes forward, away from you. Put on gloves before grabbing a step or a mat. These precautions may be inconveniently time-consuming, even embarrassing to do. But accepting the inconvenience is a whole lot better than lying in bed, sick as a dog, because you picked up a bug at your gym. Or, you can tell your Gym or Health Club to take a proactive approach against GERMS! If you are a concerned customer and want a cleaner, healthier gym for your workout without relying on ineffective harsh toxic chemicals to keep the place clean, then you need to ask them to look into the Healthier Environment Living ProgramTM offering XMICROBE Products and Services. VIDEO: H1N1 In Your School?
VIDEO: What to Do if H1N1 Hits Your Kid’s School (CBS) About 600 schools have shut their doors already for a period of time this flu season due to an outbreak of the H1N1 virus. Watch this CBS Video to find out what you should do next Watch CBS News Videos Online With the trend expected to continue, school closings will almost certainly exceed last spring’s total of 700 - despite federal officials recommending at the beginning of the school year that schools stay open and not disrupt normal activities for the pandemic. Every day this week in the United States, there were more than 200 schools closed due to H1N1. And the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 19 deaths from H1N1 complications among children in the latest reporting week, the biggest weekly number yet, and brining the total to 114. It was the second straight weekly spike. So, parents are facing a dilemma: What if the virus hits your youngster’s classroom or school? Do you send a healthy child to class, or keep him or her home? Dr. Holly Phillips supplied some answers on “The Early Show Saturday Edition.” She advised that you make sure the sick kids are home and there are no symptomatic kids still in school. Keep kids home at the first sign of illness. Parents are on the frontline and are going to make the biggest difference in this national health emergency, Phillips says, adding that, by keeping kids home at the first hint he or she may have H1N1, you’re protecting them and others. And that, she says, is how we’ll keep our schools open. What about when your child is healthy but you learn someone in their class or school has H1N1? That’s a tough call, Phillips admitted to “The Early Show Saturday Edition co-anchor Erica Hill. “The best thing to do is communicate with the teachers and the school staff to make sure the sick kids are at home and they’re staying home, and also there aren’t children with symptoms still in the classroom.” After-school activities may actually pose a greater risk of H1N1 transmission than school hours, Phillips points out, because kids are in closer contact, playing sports, in locker rooms, socializing, etc. Touching and breathing are a breeding ground for the illness. If your child is on a play date, don’t hesitate to ask other parents questions if you suspect any of their friends is displaying possible H1N1 symptoms. It’s better to be safe than sorry, Phillips says. Typical first signs of H1N1 include fever, body aches and a runny nose; coughs come a little later. Halloween presents a unique challenge, Philips admits, so parents should make sure trick-or-treaters follow the usual hygiene rules, by washing their hands frequently, perhaps using a hand sanitizer, and trying no to cough on someone else or get coughed on. Phillips noted an encouraging sign: There’s no negative word on the safety of either the H1N1 vaccine or the one for this year’s seasonal flu. The CDC reported some mild allergic reactions, along the same lines as what is seen with the regular flu shot Read More →

Keeping building air purified
Desert Valley Times, Home & Real Estate Keeping building air purified Modern housing standards aimed at sealing off a residence from the outside environment often end up sealing in a wide range of harmful pollutants. “The Interior of homes and businesses are typically two to five times dirtier than the exterior and some are over a hundred times dirtier.” Says Jerry Davis, owner of EHI, a business that offers H.E.L.P. - the Healthier Environment Living Program, which provides bacterial and microbial protection for buildings. He tests indoor air and surfaces for pollutants, and does mold testing and removal. Davis said such protection is necessary, partly because of building codes. “We have made our houses so tight and energy efficient that they no longer breathe,” he said. “We even wrap our homes in the same substance that I use to keep the mold off of me when I do mold remediation.” “While allergy sufferers are the first to feel the effects of a dirty interior environment, it affects a broad range of the populations,” Davis said. “Even in businesses, the absentee rates are ever increasing because of illnesses that seem to be passed around from one employee to the next, and then back again,” he said “We are living in culture plates. Especially in Mesquite, because everyone keeps their houses closed. We bring in all of the outdoor allergens and are keeping them inside, along with all the chemicals we use in trying to keep everything clean. They just stay inside and continue to multiply and give off these harmful gases.” Why is testing for such allergens, bacteria and molds so important? “A gap exists between the patient and doctor,” said Davis. “The doctor really has no clue as to what the patient is living in or what the patient is exposed to. The doctor’s only recourse is to do allergen testing on the skin to find out what is bothering them. “Working in conjunction with the National Jewish Health Organization, which is the leading lung and respiratory organization in the world, we can run the test they provide and then send it in so that they can identify the specific allergens that are present. So that with doctors report the patient doctor can now make a more accurate diagnosis. Davis’ company, EHI, provide both air and surface testing. Why surface testing? Those are the breeding areas for all the harmful bacteria, salmonella, E. coli and other unwanted organisms. “Our solutions are environmentally friendly using non-chemical based technology. Its water-based, non-toxic and EPA registered,” said Davis. “But it’s hard to convince people of their needs, because if it can’t be seen people think that I can’t be real.” Using a particulate counter, Jerry demonstrated that the normal range for outside air is around 300 particles per cubic foot (PPCF). From the houses that Davis has tested in Mesquite, the cleanest has been in the range of 300 to 600 PPFC, but he has also tested houses whose inside air quality has spiked off the chart, or over 2,000 PPFC. “The particulate counter picks up anything from .5 micron up to 10 microns,” said Davis “All pollens, allergens, bacterium and molds resides within that range, so what the particulate counter does is examines 1/10 of a cubic foot of air every second” “The Lady whose house was in the range of 300 to 600 PPFC had very bad allergies, and had been treated for years. Well, after we treated her home, the levels went down to 200 PPFC and below.” One home had HEPA filters throughout, yet it was still averaging between 700 and 800 PPFC, and would spike well above the 2,000 PPFC range at times. After the treatment, it was averaging in the low 100 range, and now the occupant is able to breathe a whole lot easier, no longer needing all the drugs he was buying over the counter. “In fact, after the treatment I recommended that he turn off the HEPA filters because the house was cleaner than the recommended PPFC,” said Davis. In a testimonial letter, Albert Krause of Beaver Dam writes that “the fine desert dust and pollen has affected his wife’s health.” “We now find that my wife is sensitive to something in the area, although allergy tests have been unable to pinpoint all of the culprits,” he writes. “Now (after EHI’s treatment of the home) my wife’s nagging cough has diminished considerably and we are quite happy with the results.” Another client, Booker Burney, said he has had allergy problems for years, and even underwent nasal surgery in an attempt to alleviate breathing problems. “After his home was tested and treated by Davis, Burney’s symptoms were significantly diminished. “What a pleasure to finally breathe at ease,” he said. What does the work is an antimicrobial fogger that is EPA registered and covers every surface in the home, with the treatment lasting up to six months. It isn’t chemically based, but it is a polymer that is positively charged that traps all these allergens and molds, which are negatively charged particles. So everything in the air is attracted to this polymer coating and is impaled. And it is killed mechanically not chemically. “Some of the problems that we are having is that theses allergens and bacteria are mutating and are now resistant to all the chemicals we’ve been using for years to clean and eliminate them,” said Davis. “People think that the way they can keep their houses clean and safe is by using all these cleaning and sanitizing products which contain chemicals which have been found for the most part as ineffective, in that they allow bacteria to mutate into super bugs. The homeowner is the one the toxic cleaning chemicals are affecting by inhalation. Cleaning chemicals do not kill all bacteria, just as antibiotics no longer are effective against all infections. “But what we provide is a long lasting, non-chemical system that reduces and eliminates these harmful contaminates, allowing people to feel safe about the air they’re breathing in their homes, at their workplaces, or in any public facility that applies this new and healthier system.” He said the new program has been found to be beneficial in health care, health clubs, entertainment, hospitality, food service, veterinarian, as well as sports and transportation EHI services also include mold remediation. This includes containing the affected area, the removal of the contaminated items including wallboard, flooring, carpets, furniture, and personal items, and then cleans all contaminated surfaces. The method used in the removal of mold includes an ice blasting system, which EHI was the first to employ in Southern California, HEPA vacuuming, wiping and scrubbing with specialized solutions, sanding of wood surfaces, and the application of mold retardant. After the mold is removed, as assessment specialist then takes air samples to insure that the mold spores have been sufficiently removed. Davis also has a sophisticated infrared camera allowing homeowners detect areas of missing insulation and insulation defects due to damage, moisture, and improper installation. It also finds duct leaks when used with a duct pressurization tensing, as well as potential areas of condensation that can lead to future mold problems. Jerry Davis is a certified indoor air and surface quality consultant, professional environmental inspector, certified mold inspector, certified toxic mold inspector and mold contractor certified by the Mold Inspectors and Contractors Institute, and certified home inspectors through the National Association of Certified Home Inspectors. Mt. Kisco Senior Center gets H.E.L.P !
In an effort to help protect its dozens of daily visitors and employees, the Mt. Kisco, Fox Center has adopted the Healthier Environment Living Program. (H.E.L.P.)Knowing that Senior Citizens are most at risk for Flu and related problems, The Center’s Management team jumped on the opportunity to help protect them from getting or transmitting germs within the community’s tight knit Senior population. “With the generous consideration from Check Mark and Advanced BioShield we feel that we have raised the bar in the quality of service we provide,” remarked Jean Arra, the centers Senior Nutrition Program Director. Having a deep understanding of the importance of keeping a clean dining facility Jean recognized immediately how utilizing a long term protectant would benefit the center.”We hope other Senior Centers in the county do the same.” Liz Dieter, the centers Recreation Supervisor, was impressed with the ongoing results of the Healthier Verification Testing in the areas outside of the dining area. “You can’t argue with the test results” she said, “The number is right there in front of you.” Now that we have seen the results inside the center we are going ahead with treatment of our transport vehicles also” stated Dieter. Charles Pieragostini, Mt. Kisco Recreation Commissioner, who oversees all of the towns recreation facilities was also impressed and has made the decision to treat the Village’s public pool facility. “It is easy to see how adopting the H.E.L.P. program will improve the cleanliness of our bath house and changing facility. We are always concerned about mold growth due to the wet conditions we operate in and reducing or eliminating fungal growth will cut down on the possibility of spreading simple things like Athlete’s Foot.” ” I also like the fact that our primary season can likely be protected with a two part one step application - that saves time and money! Pro-active Mid-West Clinical Director - protects emergency care facilities
As a Clinical Director for several emergency care facilities in the Mid-West we see hundreds of patients a week. Many of these patients are suffering from the effects of staph and MRSA. Until recently there was little we could do for them other than topical treatment and advice on hygiene in the home. Thanks to the Healthier Environment Living Program we now have several valuable tools we have added to the way we treat those patients. The Healthier Environment Living Program offers indoor testing, education, and solutions approved by the EPA. Their anti-microbial applications protect every surface in any indoor environment. Additionally, their EPA approved laundry additive makes clothes and bedding anti-microbial for up to 100 washes. This is ground breaking technology! As physicians, we now have the tools needed to give our patients the ability to have their home and laundry protected against staph, MRSA, and other bacteria that easily infects other family members and friends. We are very excited about the Healthier Environment Living Program and all the components that comprise their effective education, testing, and treatments. Dr. Darren W. Dr. Marie Carter recommends healthier environments to patients
As a General Surgeon and Head of Wound Care for a metropolitan hospital, I look for ways to benefit my patients in their constant struggles against bacteria and a host of other infections. Other than topical washes and education about controlling their condition, there was little I could do for them. That is no longer the case! Thanks to the Healthier Environment Living Program™ there is now an environmentally friendly program that is highly effective in destroying a host of harmful bacteria and other dangerous microorganisms. The Healthier Environment Living Program™ consists of 3 valuable tools in achieving healthier indoor environment; Education, Testing, and Solutions are key components to the program and what medical professionals look for in treatment of their patients. My Healthier Environment Living Program™ professional tested and treated my office, my waiting room, my clinical facility, and my home. In all cases elevated bacteria counts were reduced to exceptional levels. I highly recommend to every patient I see to implement to Healthier Environment Living Program™ into every facet of their daily lives. Their homes, laundry, work spaces, and vehicles should have this protection applied. Dr. Marie Carter General Surgery-Board Certified Oklahoma Read More →
